Discourse analysis of the Coleman/Bush interview
Discourse Analysis Group (DAG) talk
22nd November
John Cullen, a recent recruit to the Business Faculty has kindly agreed to give a talk to the Discourse Analysis Group (DAG). The talk gives a discourse analysis of Carole Coleman's 2004 interview of President Bush.
John draws on the work of Norman Fairclough to analyze this much discussed and debated media event. The talk is being held in the Board Room (2nd floor) DIT Aungier St. on Tuesday, November 22nd, 1pm-2.00pm. All interested parties are welcome.
DAG was formed by Business Faculty staff and postgraduate students in October 2003. The group is interested in researching discourse (from talk to text to music) in itself and in its function. Discourse analysis has many roots and schools and the group aims to accommodate them all, and all of those interested in them across the institute.
So far DAG has held nine seminars ranging from a data analysis session to a theoretical session on the connections between interactionism and discourse analysis. DAG also has some website space where items such as working papers and an emerging bibliography can be accessed and contributed to.
Though DAG is a focussed research group, the transdisciplinary nature of discourse analysis means that it is particularly suited to its DIT environment, and also means that there's great potential for interfaculty synergies. With that in mind all those working in or having an interest in the discourse analysis area across the institute are most welcome to join DAG. Anybody working on discourse analysis who is willing to present to the group is doubly welcome.
