Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Day - 21 January
A Habitat for Humanity Volunteer day has been organised on Saturday the 21st January for DIT staff and students. Habitat is a charity that builds houses for poor people all around the world, and they are currently building their first houses in Ireland. Volunteers work for the day on a building site, building the houses. The house designs are volunteer friendly and no experience is required. I volunteered a while ago; I'd never held a saw before and by the end of the day I was hammering in planks with the best of them. You could be doing anything from stacking bricks to painting, but its fun and there's a great atmosphere on-site.
We are looking for at 6 volunteers from all areas of the DIT - staff, students, whoever - to join us for the day on the 21st. It's a lot of fun and you get to help a poor family have the chance to own their own home. DIT has already been involved in 2 volunteer days for Habitat and a great time was had by all. Transport will be arranged for those who need it (probably a taxi picking up from the DIT).

We are also looking for 8 volunteers who would be interested in a 2-week trip to South America with Habitat either this Summer or next Summer, or for people who would be willing to fundraise for this. All costs are paid by fundraising, you work on site building houses and then spend a couple of days doing touristy things in the country. Each team member needs to raise €2200, which pays for flights accommodation, food, tourist events, insurance and everything except spending money. We plan to organise group fundraising events to raise this money.
