Campus Engage and DIT - Faculty of Engineering and Students Learning with Communities - present:
Workshops on Students Learning with Communities – in engineering and across disciplines.
Professor Bill Oakes, of Purdue University in Indiana in the USA, is coming to DIT for a series of workshops and round-table discussions on community-based learning or service learning. Professor Oakes is the founder and director of EPICS, an award-winning programme in cross-disciplinary engineering education.
Programme of events in DIT:
Thursday 6 November:
10.30am – 12 noon – Round-table discussion on community-based learning (CBL) /service-learning in engineering.
Open to: Engineering staff from colleges across Ireland and community representatives - participants must already be involved in CBL in some form.
Numbers: Limited to 20 – please book early.
Location: Boardroom, first floor, DIT Bolton St.
1.30pm – 4.30pm (including coffee break) – General workshop on CBL, with a focus on engineering but also looking at possibilities for collaboration with other disciplines.
Open to: Lecturing staff and students from all disciplines from colleges across Ireland, and interested community representatives.

Friday 7 November:
10am – 11am – General workshop on designing an integrated CBL programme across DIT faculties

11.30pm – 1.00pm – Small round-table consultation on integrated CBL programmes
Open to: Lecturing staff already working on interdisciplinary CBL projects from colleges across Ireland (attendance at previous session on Friday is a prerequisite)

Biography
Bill earned his B.S.M.E. and M.S.M.E. from Michigan State University, worked as a design engineer for GE Aircraft Engines and then earned his Ph.D. at Purdue. He has served as chair for the ASEE Illinois/Indiana section, member of the board for the ASEE Freshman Programs Division and co-chair for the 2005 Frontiers in Education Conference. He has received numerous awards including the National Society of Professional Engineers Educational Excellence Award, Purdue's Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and Purdue Engineering's Dean A.A. Potter Outstanding Teaching Award. He is a Fellow of Purdue's Teaching Academy, Purdue's Community of Service-Learning Fellows and Indiana Campus Compact. He was a co-recipient of the National Academy of Engineering’s 2005 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education and recipient of the 2006 Campus Compact Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning. He is a co-author the recently published textbook Service-Learning: Engineering in Your Community.
