DIT Lecturer presented with Justice Media Award

Dublin, Sunday 9th November 2003 - DIT lecturer in Law and Media, Damian McHugh (BL), was today presented with a Justice Media Award 2003 by the Law Society of Ireland for his book, Going to Court: A Consumer's Guide.

The Law Society makes two awards - the Justice Award and the Certificate of Merit. The Justice Awards are presented for outstanding contributions to the public's understanding of the Irish system of law and justice. Certificates of Merit are presented for entries judged to be noteworthy examples of public service in this regard.

Damian has been associated with the DIT since the early 1980's when he studied for his pre-Bar exams in the College of Commerce, Rathmines and secured a Diploma in Legal Studies before entry to the King's Inns where he was called to the Bar in July, 1985. He taught Journalism in the original Diploma in Journalism course in the early 1980s and since 1998 has been involved with a number of courses in DIT including the MA in Journalism and the MA in Public Relations.

In 1989 he published his first book, Libel Law: A Handbook for Journalists, the second edition of which was published in September, 2001. In October last, his latest book, Going to Court: A Consumer's Guide was published. It is dedicated to the memory of the late Mr. Joe Christle, formerly of the College of Commerce, Rathmines whom Damian acknowledges as the person most responsible for giving him and other mature students the opportunity to qualify as barristers.

Damian was a member of the editorial staff of Irish Press Newspapers from 1968 until his closure in 1995 and practiced as a barrister for a number of years before retiring from the Bar three years ago.

Damian received the award from outgoing President of the Law Society, Ms. Geraldine Clarke and by the Director General of the Society, Mr. Ken Murphy, at a ceremony at the Society's Blackhall Place headquarters in Dublin. This is the 11th year of the awards competition.
