Major research database now accessible nationally

29 September 2003

CHEST - the Combined Higher Education Software Team - has announced that it has secured full access to the Web of Science online database for all Irish higher education institutions.

This electronic information service makes available indices of scholarly journals across all disciplines. Thanks to funding from CHEST, all Irish third level institutions will now have access to bibliographic data, abstracts and cited references from over 8,500 of the world's leading research journals.

The newly appointed Chairperson of CHEST in Ireland, Mr. David Scott, explained that until now, this facility was only available to a consortium of Irish universities and DIT. Mr. Scott, who is Chief Information Systems Officer with DIT, said "CHEST has used its resources to expand this consortium to now include all of the Institutes of Technology. The database, which contains reference material from as far back as 1945, is internationally regarded as the world's leading research information source and it can become the foundation stone of a truly national research information service here in Ireland".

Ireland now joins Australia, Norway, Japan and a small number of other countries which currently enjoy access to the full Web of Science database.
