An industry led initiative, the programme is being promoted by the Irish Hotel and Catering Institute, in association with key industry representatives including Fáilte Ireland, the Irish Hotels Federation and members of the network. The training programme is set to be delivered to Human Resource Managers, Senior Managers and Middle Managers in member organisations.

At the launch, Minister Parlon said the growth and development of the tourism industry over the last number of years is largely down to the quality of the workforce.

"Quality service is one of the key elements in keeping Ireland at the competitive edge of the world economy," Minister Parlon said. "I am delighted to be able to launch this very innovative Hospitality Management Skillnet. This welcome programme will promote and improve training in the hospitality sector in Ireland and ensure that it continues to be a vibrant industry, which is very important to our economy."

Mr Peter Wilson, President of the Irish Hotel & Catering Institute, the Professional Body for Hospitality Managers in Ireland, said this initiative provides an excellent template for partnership and a real opportunity to spread significant benefits across the hospitality industry.

'In order for our industry to continue to grow, we must retain the talent we currently have and provide them with the skills they require to operate in today's business environment. The Hospitality Management Skillnet programme will assist our industry in achieving this,' Mr Wilson said.

The training programme will commence on 23rd September 2003 and runs through until December 2004. The courses are taking place in various hospitality venues across Ireland.
