DIT "High Flyers" wins TV award

27 May 2004:

A documentary made by students of DIT's School of Media has won the 'Undergraduate Factual category' award in the annual RTS Awards in London.  The documentary, entitled 'High Flyers', charts the progress of two participants in the 2003 Special Olympics which took place in Ireland.  The award was presented in London earlier this month by Tim Vaughan, Head of Drama at London Weekend Television.

The judging panel's citation for 'High Flyers' read as follows: "This entry demonstrates the truth of the dictum that when it comes to documentaries the first three rules are subject, subject, subject. This subject was about overcoming disability.  The film sent out a feeling of hope and optimism without once ducking the realities of Down's Syndrome and the difficulties of living with it."

"High Flyers" was directed by Jean Devlin and produced by Shona Mullen.  DIT students were also nominated in the Undergraduate Non-factual category for "Screwed", directed by Colm Bairéad and produced by Greg Corcoran.

Ms Grainne O'Rourke from DIT's Media Production Unit said it was a great honour for both to be nominated.  "This is a very prestigious competition and it is a great achievement for the students to be nominated.  The judging panel's citation for "High Flyers" is very apt and we would hope it will help us to persuade television programmers to broadcast the winning documentary".

In total there were 237 entries from all over the UK, Ireland and a small number of other European countries.  Undergraduate entries were nominated on a regional basis in the Animation, Factual and Non-Factual categories. Regional winners then went forward for consideration by the National Jury which selected three nominees in each category.  The winners were then selected by secret ballot.
