DIT Engineering Student Sheds Light on Lamppost problems

Dublin, 28th June, 2004 :  Paul O'Connell, a final year Mechanical Engineering student in the DIT Bolton Street Campus, has taken 3rd place in the Siemens Young Engineer of the Year Award. The Awards were held in Dublin on Monday, 21st June.

Siemens Young Engineer of the Year Award Group
(L-R)Lorenz Zimmermann, Managing Director, Siemens Limited Paul Connell (DIT), Niamh Thompson (CIT), Ellen Roche (NUIGalway), Paddy Caffrey, (IEI & President &Chartered Engineer)

Run in association with the Institute of Engineers of Ireland (IEI), the Awards showcase novel and intuitive engineering applications from some of Ireland's most promising young engineers.

Paul's entry project involved designing and manufacturing an automated system suitable to test the structural stability of street lighting columns. Research showed that in the UK alone, over 60% of street lamps are more than 20 years old. Encouraged by rusting and stress, many of these street lamps are in a dangerous state of deterioration, representing genuine hazards to pedestrians and motorists.

Realising that warning signs such as cracks are often hidden underground or beneath layers of paint, Paul designed an automated system to test the material, foundations and structural soundness of any lighting column while still in the ground.

Mr. Lorenz Zimmermann, Managing Director, Siemens Limited, and one of the judges for the Awards, praised the participation of the students involved: --The standard was excellent and all of the finalists showed outstanding innovation and creativity.

The Siemens Young Engineer of the Year Awards are open to final year engineering students in all Irish Universities and Institutes of Technology.

Congratulations to Paul on his achievement from all in DIT.
