Ellen Hazelkorn collection donated to DIT Library

Dr. Ellen Hazelkorn, Director and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts, last week made a very significant donation of books to DIT Library. The thousand-volume collection contains important political and sociological books and journals, spanning the 20th century, with an emphasis on socialist theory and history, Irish labour and political history, and political movements in southeast Asia and the US.

At a reception in the Aungier Street Library last week, Dr. Frank McMahon, Director of Academic Affairs, thanked Dr. Hazelkorn for her generosity. He said "The concept of donating books to university libraries is well-established elsewhere, but has only occurred in more recent times in Ireland. I hope that this first donation will spark off an interest and may influence others to follow suit."

Dr. Philip Cohen, Head of the Library Service in DIT, also expressed appreciation on behalf of the Library. Having joined DIT in September, he said he was delighted to have the opportunity to accept this first significant donation and he reassured Dr. Hazelkorn that the books would be well used.

In reply, Dr. Hazelkorn said "It's always a difficult decision to part with your books but I'm happy that they will have an appreciative home. This collection represented various periods of my academic life and I hope they will be of interest to many students and researchers in the future." She thanked the Library, and Ann Wrigley and Anne Ambrose in particular, for the care that had been taken in cataloguing them.

The Ellen Hazelkorn collection is now available to all users of DIT Library.
