European Award for DIT's School of Languages

15 September, 2004

The DIT School of Languages has won a European award for languages.  The Award, 'The Language Label', recognises creative ways to improve the quality of language teaching, motivate students and make the best of available resources. The project that has won the accolade for DIT is: 'A Virtual Space for the Spanish Class'.

The project uses WebCT, an interactive computer programme, to devise a virtual learning platform for students in the Postgraduate Diploma in Spanish. In essence, WebCT effectively liberates the teacher or instructor from traditional space and time boundaries, by offering a custom designed space that is accessible to participants at any time from any place.  It is tailored to meet the needs and requirement of the students.

It provides users with the opportunity to interact and use Spanish outside classroom times. Students can cooperate in tasks and projects and post their work in the 'Presentation' section so that all members of the group can study them on-line or download them to their computers.

Congratulations to Maria-Jose Gonzalez, Spanish Lecturer, School of Languages, who presented 'A Virtual Space for the Spanish Class' to the European Label Award 2003.
