'Tradfest' launch night

04 February 2004:

Students from Dublin Institute of Technology have organised a major traditional music event aimed at students all over Dublin. 'Tradfest' will take place next Tuesday 10 February in the Redbox on Harcourt Street with more than 40 musicians playing on the night. Alan Mac Stiofáin of DITSU said "Tradfest is being organised to embrace Irish music in a modern context. It will be similar to events run by other universities and colleges around Ireland but it is the first gig of its kind in Dublin. The line-up is fantastic and includes Derek Warfield formerly of the Wolfe Tones, and Nigel Davey of Riverdance fame."

Tradfest has received financial support from the Institute's Cultural and Social Committee and from DIT Students' Union. All proceeds will go to charity, but with a ticket price at just €5, it's very accessible for student.

The students' union says that gigs have become a major part of 'RAG' (Raising and Giving) day, and they are inviting students from all the Dublin colleges - UCD, Trinity, DCU, St. Pats, Tallaght IT, Blanchardstown IT, and NCAD - to come along and show their support.

The line-up in the Redbox on Tuesday 10 will include:

- Derek Warfield and The Sons of Erin
- A Riverdance Collection including Nigel Davey and other top names from Riverdance accompanied by a percussionist
- An Irish Dancing Act - 4 musicians and 4 Awarded traditional dancers
- Cóisir, the up and coming 3 piece band
- DIT Tradfest Bands, consisting of twenty musicians currently students of DIT and other colleges.

Alan Mac Stiofáin says that while this is the inaugural year, 'Tradfest' is an event with big ambitions. "It has burst onto the student scene indicating a revitalisation of Irish Culture and Music in contemporary society. The plan is to gather Irish traditional musicians from colleges across Dublin and to provide a forum for them to play and enjoy trad music during their time in college."

The Launch Night is expected to draw a large crowd so if you want to join the throng, here are the details:
