DIT Physics Website wins Prestigious Golden Spider Award for Best Educational Institution Website 2005

02nd December, 2005 The DIT School of Physics website has been awarded the coveted eircom Golden Spider Award for Best Educational Institute Website (Third Level) for 2005. The award was presented by Fintan Lawler, Managing Director of eircom.net, to the website's designer, Dr Des O'Mahony at the gala blacktie awards ceremony in the Burlington Hotel on December 1st. Dr O'Mahony, who lectures in the School of Physics, has designed, maintained and hosted the website for over seven years and has expanded its content in recent years to include a unique and comprehensive annual student yearbook, and an online showcase of graduates' final year projects.

Hailed as "the Oscars of the internet industry", the Golden Spider Awards are considered to be Ireland's most prestigious internet awards and were established nine years ago to promote and reward excellence in the internet industry. They have become an established landmark in Irish business and technology with hundreds of websites nominated annually across twenty five categories.

The judging panel, comprising leaders from industry, commerce, media and academia, evaluated websites based on different criteria including: content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and overall experience.

Commenting about the winners of the 2005 Golden Spiders, Fintan Lawler, Director of eircom net said "The standard of entries this year has been exceptional and is indicative of the highly progressive and competitive business environment. This year's record number of entries clearly illustrates how committed Ireland is to driving new levels of excellence in web technology and sustaining Ireland's economic success".

Dr O'Mahony was also the recent recipient of the Netvisionary Award in Online Trade from the Irish Internet Association for his contribution to e-commerce technology.
