Dublin, 07 March 2005:

DIT student David Gillick took the European Indoor Championships 400 metres by storm this weekend, winning Ireland's first sprint gold medal in 73 years!  David, who is studying Management and Logistics in DIT's Faculty of Business, told the Irish Times after his historic win "Crossing that line with the arms raised and going on a lap of honour, that's something you dream about as a kid.  You really do.  So you'd live for a moment like that again.  And I suppose that's my ambition now.  That's the motivation."

David has been a DIT Sports Scholar for the past two years, and in 2004 was presented with an 'All Star Award' at DIT's Sports Awards.  The All-Star award recognises individual sporting achievement among DIT students, so the judges had clearly spotted his talent and commitment some time ago!

President of DIT, Professor Brian Norton, spoke to David by phone in Madrid this morning and on behalf of everyone in DIT congratulated him on his great success.  Gillick returns to Dublin tonight and starts his work experience programme tomorrow - now that's real commitment!
