Great Success for the School of Culinary Arts

DIT Student wins Young Chef of the Year Competition 2006

Mr. John Kelly, from Shraugh, Gowran, Co. Kilkenny a student of the BA Honours Degree in Culinary Arts in the School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology, DIT, Cathal Brugha St. is this years' winner of the Knorr Young Chef of the Year Competition. This prestigious competition was held at Dundalk Institute of Technology on the 8th of February. There were twelve students representing the Culinary Colleges of Ireland in this very strongly contested competition.

Each student had to compile and cook a menu comprising a starter and main course in a strict time frame and to the highest standards. John's winning dishes comprised of an Escabeche of Baby Carrots and Salsify with Roasted Fillet of Red Mullet. This was followed by an Assiette of Rabbit, with thyme confit potato, puree of celeriac, morels and a vanilla jus Johns' prize for winning first place includes an all expenses paid trip to an International Food Fair in Chicago USA, in May.

While congratulating John on this fantastic achievement he is keen to acknowledge the support and guidance of his tutors and in particular Mr James Rock, Lecturer in the Culinary Arts who was his mentor for this competition. The photograph shows John with his mentor Mr James Rock.

The winning of this award is a fitting tribute to the students and staff of the school of Culinary Arts and Food Technology whose mission is to provide leadership by achieving the highest standards and the promotion of excellence, innovation and creativity.
