DIT Team Claim Second Place in Prestigious International Technology Competition

Dublin, 13th August 2007: Two DIT students have won second place in the web development category at the prestigious Microsoft Imagine Cup Finals in Seoul, South Korea.  Marouf Azad and Mohammed Al-Tahs, who are both studying Computer Science in DIT Kevin Street, competed against five other teams in one of the most challenging events of the cup, a 24-hour non-stop programming marathon.  The two DIT students qualified for the finals in Seoul as one of six finalist teams from an initial field of 400.

The DIT team built a suite of technologies around their core project, an online code compiler that translates higher-level computer programming languages into instructions a machine can understand directly. According to Mohammed Al-Tahs 'winning the second place award was amazing. We had the confidence in our project but we knew it would be extremely difficult here.'

This is the first time that Ireland has entered a team in the cup, which was launched by Microsoft in 2003 and includes competitions in programming, web development and digital arts. Almost 100,000 students initially registered for the competition. The final 112 teams that arrived in Seoul competed with projects on the theme, "Imagine a world where technology enables a better education for all", for prizes totalling $170,000.

In a separate category at the finals a team from NUI Maynooth also picked up an award for their software design project.
