DIT dedicates lecture theatre in memory of Michael

Patrick Quinn C.Eng. P.Eng.  to give inaugural lecture

Dublin 19 November 2007:  DIT is to dedicate its large lecture theatre in Bolton Street to the memory of the late Michael O'Donnell, who died last year.  Michael O'Donnell was a distinguished figure in engineering in Ireland, and a much-loved educationalist.  He was the Principal of the former College of Technology in Bolton Street, the first Acting President of Dublin Institute of Technology and was conferred with an Honorary Fellowship of DIT.  His career in DIT spanned forty years, during which he was an inspiration to colleagues and students.

To mark the dedication of the Michael O'Donnell Theatre, renowned engineer and DIT graduate Patrick Quinn will deliver the inaugural lecture on Monday 26 November.  Pat Quinn first worked in Ireland with Thomas Garlands and Joseph Mallaghs before heading to Canada.  There he built an outstanding career, founding Quinn Dressel, a structural design office which has been responsible for structural design on many landmark buildings internationally.  In recognition of his achievements throughout his career, he will be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate at the Faculty of Engineering graduation ceremony on Saturday 24 November in St. Patrick's Cathedral.

In his lecture on Monday, entitled 'Shaping public policy: the engineer in public planning and decision making', Pat will suggest how engineering must restate its vision, establish new directions and plan for their implementation.  A passionate proponent of the profession, he has argued forcefully in Canada for a much higher public recognition of engineers and engineering.  Believing that engineers should participate at all levels in government planning and policy, he has been an active advocate for increasing the public profile of engineering professionals in addressing major issues, including energy, infrastructure, the environment and public safety.  In his address to an audience of Irish engineers he will press upon them the urgency of raising the profile of the profession in Irish public life.

The lecture will take place on Monday 26 November at 7pm in The Michael O'Donnell Theatre, DIT Bolton Street.  Tea/coffee will be served at 6.30 pm and an informal reception will follow the lecture.
