Inaugural conferring of title of Professor in DIT

Dublin 15 March 2007: DIT has awarded the title of Professor for the first time in its history. Nine members of academic staff were conferred with the title by Professor Brian Norton, President of DIT, at a dinner held in their honour in DIT Cathal Brugha Street. The dinner was attended by members of DIT's Governing Body, including Chairman Mr. Seán Dorgan, and by faculty colleagues.

Speaking after dinner, Professor Norton extended his sincere congratulations to colleagues for their achievements in their various fields. 'This award recognises your scholarship, your professional standing and your academic leadership. I would like to commend you for the distinction you have brought to DIT and for the encouragement you have shown to colleagues across the Institute. I am delighted that we can now confer this title in recognition of your achievement and I congratulate you on being the first recipients of this award - I hope that many others will follow.'

The title of Professor in DIT was instigated with the approval of its Governing Body in 2005. The Institute's Professoriate Committee was established and criteria for applications agreed. The Committee, which is comprised of members from DIT and other institutions, made its recommendations last month and these were approved by Governing Body.
