Dublin Institute of Technology Student Video Tops the YouTube Charts

A video about student life in Dublin Institute of Technology is proving to be hugely popular on the video-hosting site Youtube. Since its launch last week, the video has been viewed every 45 seconds, making this the most successful use of Youtube by a third-level institute in Ireland.  Youtube have listed the video as the 'Most Viewed Video of All Time' in the Irish education category.

The video, shot by students in DIT, gives prospective students a preview of life outside the lecture hall in the college.  It can be viewed at here or http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=o1XDouoGKN4

The video has already been awarded the following honours on YouTube:
#1 - Most Viewed (All Time) - Education - Ireland
#5 - Top Rated (All Time) - Education - Ireland
#1 - Most Discussed (All Time) - Education - Ireland

#5 - Top Favorites (All Time) - Education - Ireland
#1 - Most Linked (All Time) - Education - Ireland

Youtube is now the fourth most popular website in Ireland.  University of California, Berkeley recently made the news by putting over 300 videos of lectures and tutorials up on YouTube.

Manager of DIT Campus Life, Brian Gormley said "When we put the videos up on the website, we had a target of 2000 downloads by the end of December.  We reached our target after just 2 days."  Over 1,500 students have also embedded the video on their social networking sites, mainly Bebo and Facebook, which makes the video available to a much wider audience in the 16-24 age group.

Increasingly second-level students are using the internet to research their college choices.  Prospective students can find out more about courses and "life outside the lecture hall" at DIT's Open Day on Saturday 1st December from 9.00 to 3.30pm in DIT Aungier Street.
