A Presentation by Rory McGowan, Director, Arup Consulting Engineers

Abstract

?Great buildings do not come about by accident or luck?

This lecture by the Arup Team Leader, from competition stage to project completion, will guide you through the history of the realization of the critically acclaimed and equally controversial China Central Television (CCTV) headquarters in Beijing, China. The design was a historic close collaboration between the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and Arup Consulting Engineers. Extensive use will be made throughout the lecture of site progress photographs and descriptions of the processes & technologies adopted, adapted and used.

Rory was educated at DIT Bolton Street and Queens University Belfast and on graduation in 1986 he joined Arup?s Dublin office. He soon moved to London where he began working with high profile architects on landmark projects worldwide; including Kansai Airport with Renzo Piano, Congrexpo Lille, ITT Chicago, Whitney Museum New York, Universal Studios LA with OMA, VPRO TV HQ in Holland, Serpentine Mountain with MVRDV and Fundacion Caixa Galicia, Spain with Nicholas Grimshaw.

Rory lectures frequently and has acted as technical tutor at Architectural Schools including the Berlarge Institute Rotterdam, Architectural Association and Bartlett London.
