16 December 2008

DIT 2-13 UCC 2-10

The DIT Freshers Hurling Squad made history on Thursday night when they won the Ulster Bank Freshers Division 1 Hurling league title at Dr Morris Park, Thurles. Not only was this the colleges first ever title at this level, it was the first time the competition had been won outside Munster in six years.

However approaching half time it looked like the game was going the way of the Lee-siders. DIT were left Trailing by five points, 2-7 to 0-8 at the interval, after Waterford corner-forward Thomas Ryan hit two opening half goals for UCC; DIT dominated in midfield on the resumption to stage a superb second half display.

Centre-half-back Michael Moloney(Engineering) and team captain Michael Fagan(Product Design) led by example from defence for DIT as the Dublin college held UCC scoreless until the 17th minute of the second half, at which stage DIT drew level at 0-13 to 2-7 thanks to a point from Cuala and Dublin U21 David Treacy (Business Management), while Aodhan McEnerney(Business Management) and Shane Murphy (Electrical Apprentice) also contributed to the scoring tally.

UCC took a two-point lead with nine minutes remaining thanks to scores from Luke O Farrell and Ryan, but late goals from Moloney and Offaly senior Daniel Currams (Engineering) ensured DIT were not to be denied silverware. The DIT team bus drove off triumphant into the Tipperary night air headed for Quinns Pub in Dublin, realizing they had achieved something special in their first year as students in the college.
