My Gentle Harp
Thomas Moore Festival for Young Singers - 14 – 22 January 2008

Dublin 14 January 2007:  For two hundred years, Thomas Moore’s Irish Melodies have stood at the vanguard of our national song as one of our greatest treasures.  This week sees the first event in a year-long celebration of the melodies which brought international fame to their composer.

The DIT Festival for Young Singers is the first event in the bicentenary celebration of the publication of the first volume of Moore’s Irish Melodies.  The Festival takes place from 14 - 22 January 2008, and will provide performance and recording opportunities for young singers aged between 18 and 26 who were born on the island of Ireland or have been living here for a minimum of 18 months.  A number of bursaries, ranging in value from €500 - €2000 will be awarded to male and female singers, chosen from among the participants.  Awards will be made based on the interpretation of Moore’s Irish Melodies.

The preliminary rounds of the competition, which are open to the public, will be hosted by the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, in The Theatre, DIT Rathmines from 15 – 17 January, from 5 to 8 pm.  The winners of those rounds will go on to perform at the gala concert in the National Concert Hall at 8pm on Tuesday 22nd January. Tickets for the Gala Final can be booked through the National Concert Hall at 01 417 0000 or online at www.nch.ie

Bursary holders will also be invited to participate in the recording of all 124 of Moore’s Irish Melodies in their original settings.  These recordings will be included in the Thomas Moore Hypermedia Archive and will be universally available for free download from the archive’s website.

The festival is supported by the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism and Dublin City Council.
