World Sight Day

Story World Sight Day

Thursday Oct 9th is World Sight Day and to mark it, the Optometry students in the DIT Faculty of Science are organizing a Shades for a Day campaign. As part of the campaign, students and staff in the Optometry Department can make a donation to the charity Optometry Giving Sight (OGS), and to raise awareness for the campaign they will wear their sunglasses for the day in college.

World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. Recently, DIT?s Optometry Department, has been awarded a €1.5m grant from Irish Aid to help fund the development of an optometry course in Mozambique. Currently in Mozambique there is one ophthalmologist per million inhabitants and there are no optometrists. The project will be run in conjunction with the International Centre for Eyecare Education, and with Lurio University in Mozambique.

Further reports on this worthwhile project will be made available as it progresses. In the meantime, if you would like to know more about Shades for A Day, please contact the Optometry Department, DIT Kevin Street.
