DIT Games Society Team Triumph at Games Fleadh 2009

A team of DIT students won first prize at  XNA Ireland Games Programming competition at Games Fleadh 2009,  Ireland's largest games programming festival at  Tipperary Institute last week. Team members Zach Davidson, Mariano DiMoro, Brendan Marsh, Stephen O'Hara and Hugh O'Higgins competed against teams from 13 other institutes with their novel implementation of Asteroids in XNA, controllable using the Guitar Hero drum kit.  Their entry which made use of vector graphics and procedurally generated audio was judged a clear winner by judges from Microsoft Game Studios, Popcap games, Blackrock Studios, Atari and Realtime Worlds. The team takes home €600 in prize money and the XNA Ireland Challenge perpetual Cup.

There was further success for DIT in the Guitar Hero competition where Iain Breen, Petru Bumbar, Hugh O'Higgins and Mariano DiMoro were among the trophy winners. In the Robocode competition DIT students Neil Donegan, Adam Glendon Carraic and Trevor Punton  took home prizes of Creative Labs Mp3 players for winning the Milee battle. And finally, Andrew Bannister, Iain Breen and Petru Bumbar were highly commended by the judges for their novel game which combined RTS style controls with Asteroids.
