Peter Murray, a 2009 graduate of the DIT BA in Photography has won the esteemed Taylor Art Award. Peter from Newry, Co. Down, received the 10, 000 first-prize award for his photograph, entitled This Land Again.

Dr S.B. Kennedy, the Chairman of the Judging Panel, expressed his delight at the art works entered this year. ?We were most impressed by the scope and breadth of photographic works and printmaking, for not only have we evidence of the most recent thinking amongst young artists, but in them we stand at the cutting edge of that which can be done with new technologies.? Dr Kennedy outlined how it was therefore appropriate that the Taylor Art Award would go to a student who worked with photography as his chosen medium.

From over 500 entries from Art Colleges throughout the country, 78 pieces have been selected for the exhibition in the RDS and a total of eight Awards were made to the most outstanding works. The exhibition will run in conjunction with the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show from August 5 - 9. After the Horse Show concludes, the exhibition will continue until August 13 to give people an extra opportunity to view the artworks.

A selection of the winning and commended works will also travel to two regional venues across the island of Ireland to enable those outside Dublin to see the work. This year, the exhibition will travel to the Rua Red Arts Centre, Tallaght, Dublin 22 in September and the Regional Cultural Arts Centre, Letterkenny, Co Donegal for the month of October.

Since 1731, the RDS continues to fulfil its commitment to advancing agriculture, arts, industry and science. The Student Art Awards are part of the RDS Foundation?s Art Programme with aims to promote excellence in the arts; to further the professional development of young musicians, artists and craftspeople and to support developmental projects in the arts.
