Dublin Institute of Technology releases video guide to the CAO for parents

1st February 2010

The February 1st CAO deadline is the first key date for anyone planning to enter third level education next September.  Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) has produced an informative video guide for students but also for their parents who may be helping them with their choices.  The video guide shows how parents can provide support and advice, and gives key tips, deadlines and costs on the CAO process.  The guide has been produced in association with the National Parents Council.  The short 4-minute video is on the Prospective Students section of www.dit.ie or can be found on YouTube by searching for ?The CAO: A Parents Guide.?

DIT Admissions Officer, Frank Costello, said ?By next Tuesday, approximately 60,000 students will have submitted applications to the CAO.  Our office here in DIT gets many calls from concerned parents looking for advice on how to support their sons and daughters and we hope this short video will clarify the process for them and help them to help the student.?

According to the video guide, the key ways that parents can help students who are applying to the CAO, are to:

  • Listen to them
  • Help them narrow down their options
  • Emphasise that their choice on February 1st is not a binding decision ? over 30,000 students last year used the free facility to change their mind before the July 1st deadline.

This YouTube video is one of a series produced by DIT to help students and their parents.  They also have videos about Student Financial Aid, assistance for students with disabilities, and assistance for mature students.  The DIT YouTube channel is proving very popular, and recently one of their videos was ?The most watched video ever? in the Irish Education category.
