DIT sees graduation of first cohort of students from its MA sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach (MA in Applied Irish)

Last Saturday saw the graduation of the first ever cohort of students from MA sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach / MA in Applied Irish from the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).  The group of 12 joined over 400 other students from across DIT in St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the Institute’s end-of-year graduation ceremony.

The MA sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach / MA in Applied Irish is an innovative, two year, part-time Masters programme and is run by the School of Languages, DIT in partnership with Gaelchultúr Teo. The programme is directly funded by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (administered by the HEA).

The programme was developed as a direct response to a HEA call for an increase in the supply of graduates with specific Irish language skills. New employment opportunities have emerged in Ireland and in Europe in recent years for graduates who have high level language skills in Irish.  This demand for professionals with recognised qualifications in Irish has increased in particular since the passing into law of the Official Languages Act 2003 and the recognition of Irish as an official working language of the European Union. Graduates of DIT’s MA sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach will now be able to progress their careers and to flourish within the diversity of creative and professional Irish language, bilingual and multilingual environments in the public and private sectors both at home and abroad.

To date, the MA sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach / MA in Applied Irish has been very successful in attracting high calibre students with an interest in developing their knowledge of advanced and specialised topics in Applied Irish and the first cohort of students from this exciting programme were awarded top grades. Their achievement encapsulates the aims of the programme in responding to the identified need for an increased number of graduates with specific Irish language skills.

Speaking at the graduation DIT President, Prof. Brian Norton congratulated the students on their achievement and acknowledged their commitment to the MA in Applied Irish programme as its inaugural graduates.  “The graduation of these twelve students today sees the culmination of the students’ hard work throughout the programme. It is also an historic occasion in educational terms which sees the graduation of the first cohort of students from DIT’s MA in Applied Irish” said Prof. Norton.

The success of the new M.A. in Applied Irish in its first cycle marks another milestone in the overall development of the Irish language across DIT.  Irish language modules are available on 19 part-time and full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with well over 200 students studying the Irish language in DIT. The Institute is currently agreeing its first Scheme under the Official Languages Act to enhance service provision through the medium of Irish across the Institute and an Irish Language Student Residency Scheme as well as classes, scholarships and supports are offered by Oifig na Gaeilge, DIT’s Irish language office, to DIT students and staff.

The MA sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach is currently accepting applications for the next programme which will begin in February 2011. The closing date for applications is September 22nd 2010 and all information on the programme is available at http://gaeilgefheidhmeach.dit.ie/
