Irish director Frank Berry has been announced as the 2011 winner of the Directors Finders Series. Frank Berry will now showcase Ballymun Lullaby, his debut feature doc at the Directors Guild of America Theatre in LA on 9th September 2011. The showcase will take place in front of an invited audience of American distributors, filmmakers, and key industry personnel, with the aim of securing a US distribution deal for the film.

Ballymun Lullaby documents Music Director, Ron Cooney and children from the Ballymun Music Programme as they prepared for the recording of the ‘Ballymun Lullaby’ CD.

The Ballymun Music Programme is a very successful initiative of the DIT Community Links programme.  Led by the inspirational Cooney, this unique programme provides a pathway for participation in the arts for children from all schools in Ballymun.  Its newly opened Music Room at St. Joseph’s School is home to recorder classes; choirs; string groups; brass, wind and blues bands, with daily rehearsals taking place at 8 am!

In 2008, the Ballymun Music Programme, in association with City Arts Tower Songs, invited composer Daragh O’Toole to write an original suite for the youth orchestra and choir.   Recorded in 2009, the CD comprises four songs for choir and orchestra, performed by children from the Ballymun Music Programme with the RTE Concert Orchestra.

In this unique documentary film, independent film maker Frank Berry captures all those involved in the Ballymun Music Programme behind the scenes and during rehearsals, as well as in recordings and performances.

The Directors Finders Series 2010 was won by Ian Power for The Runway, which went on to secure a US distribution deal. Ballymun Lullaby director Frank Berry commented on the selection saying I am delighted to be given this incredible opportunity and to be presenting 'Ballymun Lullaby' at the Directors Guild of America theatre on Sunset Boulevard. The filmmaker was congratulated by Ciaran Donnelly, Chairman of SDGI, who said Berry's selection was "indicative of his remarkable creative ability."

The Finders Series, conceived by the Directors Guild of America and facilitated by the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland, presents an Irish director with an opportunity to showcase their film and to have direct access to decision makers in the film distribution process in the US.
