First China Scholarship Council graduate to receive PhD Award

24 October 2011: In 2007 China Scholarship Council (CSC) started a special project entitled State-Sponsored Scholarship Program for Graduate Students, aiming at boosting its effort in transform more Chinese Universities into world-class universities. Recognised as one of CSC’s destination universities for this program, DIT established collaboration for PhD training in DIT under this CSC program with a top Chinese university, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC).

Under the recommendation of the UESTC, Mr Erqiang Zhou, who was among the first cohort of CSC’s Scholarship students, arrived in DIT in September 2007 to undertake his PhD study in Computer Science.  Under the supervision of Dr Bing Wu and Dr Fred Mtenzi, his research subject was the management of complex information and natural language query.

During the graduation ceremony for the College of Sciences and Health on Saturday 15th of October 2011, Dr. Zhou was conferred with the Award of Doctor of Philosophy (Computing) in St. Patrick’s Cathedral.   According to Dr. Wu, “Dr. Zhou has become the first CSC scholar in Ireland - and indeed among the first group of the whole CSC program worldwide - to have completed his research and be awarded a PhD. His thesis is entitled ‘Querying Recorded Information with Natural Language’.”Dr Zhou has now returned to China where he aims to establish his own high-tech business based on the joint research with Dr Wu and other colleagues in DIT.

Mr JianMin Li, Vice-Secretary General of the Chinese Scholarship Council, congratulated DIT and told Dr Wu that CSC was very pleased with this significant achievement and grateful for the support provided by DIT towards this program.

A short video programme on DIT and this graduation ceremony was made by the Dublin Bureau of the Chinese Xinhua News Agency. The Xinhua news crew included journalist Michelle Hennessy, recent DIT graduate in Journalism.  The programme was shown worldwide on CNC World Channel (Sky Channel 516 in Ireland) on Sunday the 16th of October 2010.
