DIT Aircraft Maintenance Technician Colin Callaghan brought home a Gold Medal from the World Skills Competition which took place in London last week. Colin beat off stiff competition from; Canada, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.

From Drogheda Co. Louth, Colin is employed by City Jet and has completed  phases 4 and 6 of his Aircraft Maintenance apprenticeship in the Department of Transport Engineering in DIT.  He won the Aircraft Maintenance National Skills competition last year and has been training in the Aviation Technology Centre in DIT under the guidance of Ivan Sheridan, Assistant Head of Department Transport Engineering and World Skills Expert.

Declan Allen, Head of Department Transport Engineering, congratulated Colin on his success.  He also congratulated Ivan Sheridan, for whom it was the second consecutive Gold Medal.  “This is becoming something of a habit for Ivan, having also trained the last Aircraft Maintenance Technician Gold Medal winner Andrew Burke at the Calgary Worlds Skills Competition in 2009.  This win places the Department of Transport Engineering in DIT as a major player on the Transportation and Logistics world stage. The win is also reassuring for our students on the newly launched BEngTech in Aviation Technology (DT011) degree programme; they have chosen in to study for their degree in one of the World’s leading Aviation Technology centres.”

You can hear Colin Callaghan and DIT lecturer Ivan Sheridan talk about Worldskills 2011 on a recent interview on LMFM
