Simulation has a proven record of helping businesses cut back expenses

Simulation has taken on a significant role in decision support. It is used to evaluate alternative designs (e.g., of airport check-in lines, toll booths, hospital layout) as well as alternative strategies and tactics (e.g., of the dispatch of jobs within a factory, the assignment of maintenance personnel to machines, the scheduling of hospital staff). Discrete simulation, in particular, has evolved from its rudimentary form of the 1960s into software platforms that are capable of solving huge problems – and deliver dazzling 3D animations. Simulation is now so powerful and prevalent that we may forget the human element; e.g., the impact of the solutions we propose on actual, rather than simulated, human beings. To make matters worse, we have become so reliant on simulation that we too often fail to correlate and compare simulation “solutions” with the scientific laws of discrete process flows. As a consequence, seeming non-intuitive results are produced and, sadly, misdiagnosed. As but one example, it is entirely possible to speed up a small portion of a process flow only to discover that we have decreased the speed of the overall flow. As will be discussed, our expertise in the application of simulation must be matched by (i) an appreciation of the human element, and (ii) an understanding of the science of process flows.

Prof. James Ignizio

Prof. James Ignizio is the author of 9 books and more than 350 technical papers. He presently holds the Louis A. Beecherl, Jr. Endowed Chair at the University of Texas Pan American. Prior to his present position he was an Internal Consultant at the Intel Corporation, Visiting Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School (two years), Professor and Chair of Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia, Professor and Chair of Industrial Engineering at the University of Houston, Visiting Professor at the U.S. Army Logistics Management College, and Professor of Industrial Engineering at Penn State. In addition he has held senior management level positions (including that as a program manager for the Apollo manned moon-landing program) in the U.S. Aerospace industry.

Prof. Ignizio is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineering, a Fellow of the Operational Research Society of Britain, and a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Sciences. He is also a Distinguished Alumnus of Virginia Tech, a Professor Emeritus of the University of Virginia, and recipient of the First Hartford Prize (for contributions to the Apollo manned moon-landing mission).

Prof. Ignizio’s latest book, OPTIMIZING FACTORY PERFORMANCE – the exploitation of the Third Dimension of Manufacturing (McGraw-Hill, July of 2009). Prof. Ignizio has served as both an external and internal consultant to more than 100 firms and his short courses (in Military Systems, Manufacturing Science, Operations Management, Cost Analysis, Military Manpower, Production Management, Supply Chains, Artificial Intelligence, and Management Science) have been attended by several thousand individuals over the past two decades.
