Sustaining Engineering Society Through Leadership

DIT and CIBSE are delighted to welcome Ron Jarnagin, President of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) to deliver an address to an audience of students, academics and practitioners on the challenges and solutions of sustaining active engineering societies through leadership.

During his visit to Ireland and the UK,  Mr. Jarnagin has agreed to share his views on how engineers can demonstrate leadership and how to sustain it.   Advocating that partnerships between organisations are essential for engineering advancement and sustainability, Jarnagin believes that as a leader "You don’t have to start every parade, you just sometimes have to be able to jump in front of it if it comes by.  Leadership is contagious - enthusiasm, movement and drive will enthuse others to move towards leadership roles. And half of the leader’s effort should be looking back to ensure the next generation are following - leaders bring people along with them, they don’t go alone."

In his address, Jarnagin will identify three pillars he believes are essential to support future success ;

- developing future leadership by identifying and nurturing students and young members -

- building recognition of international issues and support for a global engineering membership.

- strengthening the industry to deliver and maintain better buildings for a society that can’t afford the price of today's developments.

Ron Jarnagin is a staff scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His has undertaken many roles in ASHRAE and recently chaired ASHRAE Standard 90.1 committee, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, and the committees that wrote three of the Advanced Energy Design Guides. As ASHRAE’s 2011–12 president, he directs the Society’s Board of Directors and oversees the Executive Committee.  He has an undergraduate degree in accounting from Louisiana State University, and an undergraduate and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida.
