Internationally Renowned Professor of early childhood education Dr. Iram Siraj-Blatchford to speak at DIT

The Centre for Social & Educational Research (CSER) at DIT is hosting a seminar on “The Power of Preschool”

The seminar, entitled “The Power of Preschool” will draw upon research studies conducted in Ireland, Wales and England to present a rich and deep context for considering the powerful role of preschool in the lives of young children.  This focus is of particular interest in light of the recent introduction of the universal free preschool year in Ireland.  DIT is delighted that the visiting speaker for the seminar is Dr. Iram Siraj-Blatchford.  Iram Siraj-Blatchford (PhD, University of Warwick) is Professor of Early Childhood Education at the Institute of Education, University of London. She has been an educational researcher for over 20 years. She is currently President of British Assoc of ECE and vice-President of the NCMA. She has lectured and researched widely for such bodies as UNESCO, UNICEF, the Aga Khan Foundation, Hong Kong Government, EU, DCSF and the Leverhulme Trust. Her current research projects include: the major DfES 15-year study on Effective Pre-school, Primary and Secondary Education 3-14 (EPPSE 3-14) Project (1997-2011) and of the Effective Pedagogy in the Early Years project (2000-2002). She is particularly interested in undertaking research which aims to combat disadvantage and to give children and families from these backgrounds a head start.  She was on the StartRight enquiry and provided evidence on early education to the National Commission on Education and the House of Commons Select Committee. She is the co/author of over 40 books, monographs and major published research reports and over a 130 chapters, research articles and reports. Iram is specialist advisor to the Minister for Education in Wales and chairs their strategy for childcare and education 0-7, she is also an adviser to Children’s Minister Beverley Hughes in England. She is an advisor to many overseas governments on early childhood policy eg Singapore, Australis, Hong Kong.

The Power of Preschool Seminar is the latest in a series of seminars organised by the CSER, addressing issues of early childhood policy and practice.   The CSER seminar series aims to provide a platform to generate debate, reflect on key issues and advance collaboration amongst academics, practitioners, researchers and policy makers in the field of ECCE.  Internationally recognised for its contributions in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECEC), the CSER has, under the directorship of Professor Nóirín Hayes, become a leader in ECEC research and continues to conduct and disseminate research pertaining to all aspects of ECEC policy. Involved in education and research in the area of ECEC in Ireland for almost twenty years, she is an internationally established researcher and commentator on ECEC policy.
