12th Annual DIT Showcase of Learning and Teaching Innovations

11th January 2012: Some 120 DIT academics gathered on campus in Cathal Brugha Street this week to participate in the 12th Annual Showcase of Learning and Teaching Innovations.  This highly successful event is organised each year by the DIT Learning, Teaching and Technology Centre (LTTC) and the Staff Training and Development unit in DIT.  Participants come from across the institute, representing all disciplines.

The theme of the event this year was “Broadening the Curriculum” and Dr. Kelly Coate, Vice Dean (Graduate Studies) in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies NUI Galway was invited to give the keynote address. Dr. Coate also lectures in the NUIG Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.   In her thought-provoking presentation on “The Curriculum and the Limits of Imagination” she challenged participants to consider what the concept of ‘curriculum’ actually means, what its purpose is, and how it should be shaped (and by whom) before deciding whether it is fit-for-purpose in the 21st Century.

The theme was also developed through each of the wide range of presentations and workshops, as well as in moderated poster sessions showcasing the wealth of innovative projects taking place across DIT. In the final session, a 15-minute voxpop clip of DIT colleagues giving their thoughts on what broadening the curriculum meant to them sparked a valuable discussion on how DIT might approach this challenge. Feedback from participants shows that the day was deemed to be an extremely valuable and thought provoking experience. As many of the sessions were recorded, these will be made available online in due course for others to enjoy at:http://www.dit.ie/lttc/events/ditannualshowcase/.
