DIT Open Day 2012 attracts thousands

6 December 2012: As the CAO deadline gets closer, DIT hosted its biggest-ever Open Day on its Aungier Street campus last weekend. Over 6000 visitors attended and the large crowds made for a great atmosphere throughout the two day event. In addition to second-level students planning on attending third level in 2013, Open Day attracted a considerable number of visitors who were interested in part-time, postgraduate and mature student options at DIT.

Held every year, DIT’s Open Day affords those interested in finding out more about DIT the opportunity to go and visit the college in person. The event is designed to make it as easy as possible for people to get all the information they need under one roof. Visitors were welcomed in the Atrium by the Admissions Office who co-ordinate the event, and by the range of student services including sports, careers, disability service, the international office and Lifelong Learning. Armed with prospectus, wallplanner and timetable for the day, visitors then made their way through the throng to find current students and staff who were available at each stand to explain what's involved in programmes in their area.

Having browsed the stands, the next step for many visitors was to take in one of the specific subject talks which were repeated at intervals of 90 minutes in lecture theatres around the building. While initial questions can be answered at the busy stands downstairs, the talks offer a quieter opportunity to talk about the subject area to those who are particularly interested but want to get an understanding of the options available within a particular programme as well as the potential career paths that may lead from it. In addition, there were special talks on preparing portfolios and auditions, and a ‘maths surgery’ and these proved exceptionally popular with visitors.

Students who attended the Open Day will have received a DIT wall planner, highlighting key dates between now and June. DIT Admissions Officer, Frank Costello said “The CAO deadline is 01 February 2013 and I would encourage students to contact DIT Admissions Office at any time to find out more about their options. Sometimes the Open Day is the first time a student may have considered their options seriously, so we are available by phone (01 402 3445) and email admissions@dit.ie to answer any of the follow-up queries they or their parents or guidance counsellors may have. We recognise the pressure they're under and are happy to relieve that in any way we can by help and advice,' he said.
