DIT student bakers bring home international honours

16th June 2012, Staffordshire: Two hundred students from colleges across the UK, as well as international teams from Ireland, Italy and Russia, took part in a series of competitions during the conference of the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees, held at Alton Towers Hotel this week.  The competition headings included bakery, dough products, decorated cakes and display, and the DIT team from Ireland excelled.  According to lecturer Ann-Marie Dunne, who accompanied and mentored the team at the competition, “This team won three 1sts, four  2nds, three 3rds, and one Very Highly Commended!  They also won three Best in Competition awards, one Overall Best Display!”

In addition to much-coveted prizes such as a trip to a Master Work Shop in Germany for Best Novice category; and a week-lon trip to Richemont School in Lucern, Switzerland for the Highest Achievement category, the team also won three perpetual trophies.  Describing the awards, a very proud Ann-Marie Dunne said “The team have brought home three fantastic pieces of silverware that are theirs to hold till next year.  This is very first time these trophies will cross the Irish Sea in almost 100 years of this competition – and now they will have the names of our DIT team inscribed on them in perpetuity!  The winners also received beautiful medals in honour of their great achievements in this competition.”
