FormulaDIT completes formula student 2012

18th July 2012: FormulaDIT, a team of Manufacturing & Design and Mechanical Engineering students from DIT Bolton St have just completed five days of intense competition at the annual international formula student competition at Silverstone. The competition challenges the students   to design and build a single-seat racing car in order to compete in static and dynamic events, which demonstrate their understanding and test the performance of the vehicle. In addition to demonstrating their technical skills students must make a business and cost presentation and outline their approached to sustainable design and manufacture.

Incredibly after only its second year competing in class 1, FormulaDIT finished 23rd overall from a final field of 103 top universities from around the world.  Only 57 teams made it to the final endurance event and of these only 27 completed it. FormulaDIT came 20th in this event which exceeded all our expectations.

Commenting, Bill Reddington from the school of manufacturing and design engineering said; "This is a remarkable achievement and myself and the three other team advisors, Donal McHale, Derek Mc Evoy and Gerry Woods are immensely proud of the team. With its limited budget and experience in the event , the team punched well above its weight. It was a pleasure to work with such a committed and talented group of engineers. These guys have set a new standard and put the DIT on the international map of top technical universities. We would like to thank all the support and encouragement we received from other colleagues within the DIT and to our sponsors, VW Ireland and Xelvin recruitment in Holland. We would also like to extend a special thanks to TDP racing, OC tuning, TRL and Mondello racing."
