Sports awards at DIT

24th April 2012: GAA stars and equestrian winners, international heroes and local legends, team players and title holders from across DIT all came together for the 15th annual DIT Sports Awards ceremony held at the Gleeson Theatre in DIT Kevin Street, Dublin on April 19.

Each year DIT recognises the outstanding contribution of individual student athletes across many diverse sporting disciplines for their achievements in sport. This year’s awards ceremony was extended to reflect not only the achievements of individual students in DIT but also the contribution of the sports clubs to campus life and the importance of participation by all students in sport and recreation. Guest of honour for the ceremony was Shane Horgan, former Ireland and Leinster Rugby Legend.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Professor Brian Norton, President of DIT complimented the hard work of all involved in DIT Sports “Active involvement in sports is something DIT encourages and the DIT Sports and Recreation service has developed a comprehensive programme of sports activities that caters from the novice to elite level across the whole spectrum of sporting disciplines from archery to waterpolo.”

The annual Sports Awards have been in existence since 1998 and aim to recognise the accomplishments of DIT students on the sporting fields and arenas of Ireland and abroad.   According to Sinead McNulty, Head of Sport, “This has been a successful year for DIT sport with a number of our teams and individual students securing nationally recognised titles and winning intervarsity trophies. For example, DIT won the All Ireland Junior Football Championship, became Leinster Junior Hurling Champions, and Leinster Junior Football Champions. Our students won Division 1 Ryan Cup Championship, are Division 2 Camogie League Champions, winners of the Lynch Shield in Ladies Football and winners of Division 3 League …and that was just in GAA!”

DIT students are involved in more than forty different sports and distinguished themselves in many arenas.  For example, DIT proved its martial arts capabilities by winning the O’Connor Cup in Shotokan Karate for the third year running, and took the silver medal in the Karate Intervarsities and bronze in the Men’s Team event in the Judo intervarsities. In Archery DIT set a new team record with Sarah Deegan becoming Irish Student ladies Compound Champion and John Smith becoming the Irish Student Indoor Men’s Compound Champion. DIT Ladies are the Senior Water polo Intervarsity Champions and winners of the Men’s CUSAI Hockey League. Aaron Smith is also this year’s Young Irish Driver of the Year, while Niall O’Mhurcu won the Intermediate Scull Single Race in Rowing Intervarsity and DIT Sailing Club were awarded IUSA Club of the Year 2011/2012.
