DIT student sets up eclectic design shop during his summer break

06 August 2013: A DIT visual communications student is putting his summer to good use by setting up a new enterprise.

Stephen Carroll has set up Ode, a unique shop and interior design consultancy, in his hometown Navan, Co Meath.

The business is located on the top floor of The Central building on Main Street, Navan. Stephen, 34, has previously designed the café/bar area of the building and an opportunity arose to use the space on the top floor.

He has just finished the third year of his visual communications degree at DIT and has set up the shop during his summer break. At the moment, it is open Thursday to Saturday, which Stephen says will fit well with his return to college in the autumn.

The items on sale in the shop are best described as vintage and retro.‌

“Originally it was going to be pretty much exclusively a 1960s theme but the bulk of it is broadly mid century – some of the old chests would be a bit older,” he says.

Stephen, who originally studied and taught interior design before returning to study visual communications, had a lot of furniture and design pieces already stockpiled before he opened the shop.

“The shop was originally going to happen when I had finished studying but the time seemed right to move into the space with the stock that I had.”

Stephen restores and revamps older pieces using some traditional techniques and also stocks new pieces made in a vintage style.

As well as running the shop, Stephen is available for interior design commissions from businesses and individuals. He has worked on many interior design projects – mostly bars and restaurants although he has also worked on a stylish caravan makeover (that’s featured on the Facebook page)!

He says that what he has learnt in visual communications has really helped when it comes to preparing promotional materials for the shop.

Ode will be officially launched this weekend and more information can be found on its Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/odedesignshop.
