16 July 2013: The Irish men’s and women’s football teams, of which two players are DIT students, have done well at the World University Games.

Both teams got through to the quarter finals with the women’s football team playing their sixth game in 10 days yesterday (Monday). They took on Japan in the 5th and 6th place play off and although they initially held their own, the Japanese side took the lead just before half time and went on to dominate the second half, scoring another three goals.

Seana Cooke, who studied Culinary Arts at DIT, will return home later today with her team from Kazan in Russia.

Meanwhile, the men’s football team, which includes DIT engineering student Paul Malone, play the Ukraine today in their 5th/6th place play off.

The Irish team were in a tough qualifying group and came close to getting further in the competition – their quarter final opponents France (who the Irish team lost out to only after a penalty shoot-out) have reached the final.
