05 November 2013: A major works contract has been approved at the Grangegorman site. These works will begin immediately and are vital to the preparation of the site for the new DIT Grangegorman campus.

The works contract, valued at almost €23 million, has been awarded to Limerick based Roadbridge Limited, and it is expected that 150 people will be employed over the next fifteen months.

The Minister for Education, ‌Ruairi Quinn, said of the new works contract approval: “Today’s announcement demonstrates this Government’s determination to ensure that the consolidation of the country’s largest higher education institution proceeds as speedily as possible. Placing the contract is also reflective of the continuing progress in delivering a key element of this Government’s €1.4 billion Economic Stimulus Plan.”

President of DIT, Professor Brian Norton, said, “This is another great step forward for the new city centre campus for DIT at Grangegorman.

“This project is really benefiting from the very detailed planning process that has been undertaken leading up to implementation.  Developing the infrastructure and public realm now is vital for the first phase of the project which will see 1,200 students and staff on campus next September, but it will also greatly facilitate each later stage of construction on the site so that we meet our next significant deadline of September 2017."

This announcement follows on from last week’s official publication by the National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) of a notice inviting tenders for work on the PPP projects to develop two major academic buildings on the Grangegorman campus.  The Central and East Quads will be delivered through the public private partnership process.  Construction on this aspect of the development will commence in 2015 with a completion date of 2017.  This will enable 10,000 students to be located on the new campus.
