DIT Fresher Captain Brian Power Lifts the Fresher All-Ireland Football trophy

03 March 2014: A cold but dry and bright Inniskeen Park in county Monaghan was the setting for this year’s All-Ireland Fresher Football final between DIT and St. Marys Belfast. The game was nip and tuck throughout. DIT led by four at the break but Marys shot back with four unanswered points at the beginning of the second half to tie up the game.  Riding their luck at the back with Logistics student  Eoin Fletcher at  corner back and  Print & Digital Media student Brian Power at centre back repelling attack after attack.

DIT then pushed Robbie Gaughan from Pint & Media forward from midfield into the half forward line and it immediately paid dividends.  A big win in the middle by DIT Engineering student  Thomas Corcoran was the impetus for DIT’s revival.  He fed Robbie Gaughan who went on another piercing run. This set up Aircraft Mechanical Apprentice Seanie Daly inside who found the unmarked Law student Ruairi Ó Coilleain to fist to the net. From the resulting kick out Daly tagged on another score, which seem to stop Mary’s in their tracks. Points from Accounting & Finance student Darren McElroy and Ruairi O Coilleain closed out the game for the Dublin College..

DIT joint management  Eoghan O  Grady a lecturer from DIT School of Management and Galway native Thomas Bourke were thrilled and paid tribute to St. Marys. “It was a really tough game, the six point score line flattered us, but we are so proud of the lads and the effort they have put in all year”.  They remarked “ this is great for the lads, their parents who have supported them to this point and the college and their clubs.” DIT who never had won a title at this level prior to 2008 have now won three in the last six years”.  I think you’re going to hear a whole lot more about these guys in the future both on the Sigerson stage and for some on the intercounty stage in the years to come.  We hope they enjoyed their journey this year with the college and made friends along the way.  It’s been a great year for the college, now we won this we hope it will give inspiration to the B and C team who unbelievably are also in the B and C fresher All- Ireland  Finals, which is some achievement in itself!
