DIT Hothouse, a recognised leader in technology transfer has outperformed all other Irish university technology transfer centres, completing between 10 and 20 per cent of the annual technology transfer licenses in Ireland, on just 3% of the research expenditure since its formation in 2008. For its role in facilitating technology transfer and research collaboration in 2014, DIT Hothouse has been jointly nominated for three IP Awards in the following categories;

Category: Tech Transfer Award

This award goes to the Irish Public Sector research performing entity that executed the most significant technology transfer agreement. DIT Hothouse and the DITIndustrial & Engineering Optics (IEO) Centre have been jointly nominated for the Tech Transfer Award for the commercialisation of Optrace.

Optrace

DIT’s Industrial Engineering Optics Centre (IEO) developed a ground-breaking individualized hologram to address a gap in the market for mass-produced individualized holograms, providing companies with a cost-effective means of combating the production of counterfeit products. The process involves digitally printing ink onto a light-sensitive polymer.  The printed polymer is then exposed to a controlled pattern of laser light to convert the design into a unique hologram that can incorporate a serial number, barcode, company logo and other features.  Having identified that the technology formed the basis for a business, DIT Hothouse worked with the research team to form Optrace, a DIT spin-out company specialising in novel holographic security technology. Optrace is at an early stage in its life cycle, having formed in May 2013, but is achieving impressive results to date.

Category: IP R&D Collaboration of the Year

This award is for an R&D collaboration that resulted in the introduction of new IP available for purchase or licensing where at least one of the organisations has a formal presence within the Republic of Ireland. DIT Hothouse has been nominated for its involvement in two highly successful R&D collaborations between DIT researchers and industry.

DIT CREST and Smart Wall Paint
Smart Wall Paint is not only a product of the DIT Hothouse New Frontiers incubation programme, but its core technology was developed within DIT’s Centre for Research in Environmental Surface Technology (CREST). The technology is based around a unique smart paint formula which turns any flat surface into a reusable whiteboard. Since winning the prestigious PwC Docklands Innovation Park Award for Best Investment Proposal 2013, the company has grown from strength to strength, with its products trading nationally and internationally, both on- and off-line. Smart Wall Paint is engaged in an Enterprise Ireland-backed innovation partnership with CREST to further expand its range of products through continued research collaboration. DIT Hothouse, CREST and Smart Wall Paint have been jointly nominated for this award.

DIT CNRI and OptiWi-fi
OptiWi-fi Ltd., a graduate of the 2012 Hothouse New Frontiers programme, was one of three finalists in the Docklands Innovation Park Awards 2013. The company’s core technology was developed in DIT in the Communications Network Research Institute (CNRI). The company has seen strong growth and recently received investment backing from Telefonica, a world leader in the telecommunications industry. In February 2014, OptiWi-fi announced an agreement with O2 Wifi to deploy industry-first wireless network bandwidth optimisation across their UK and Ireland networks. DIT Hothouse, CNRI and OptiWi-fi have been jointly nominated for this award.

The award winners will be announced at the DoubleTree by Hilton DublinBurlington Road, Dublin 4 on Thursday, 2nd October 2014. To learn more about the awards and to view the complete shortlist of finalists, visitwww.ipawards.ie
