DIT students perform well at Alliance of Bakery Students and Trainees annual Competition

A group of 16 Baking and Pastry Arts Management students and members of the DIT Baking Society were in Alton Towers last weekend (20-22nd June) for the Alliance of Bakery Students and Trainees Conference and Competition. The weekend was funded by DIT Societies Office, fundraising by the DIT Baking Society throughout the year and sponsorship received from the Baking Academy of Ireland. Over 200 students from Bakery colleges across the UK and Ireland attended the conference. The weekend involved industry demonstrations, career talks from industry professionals, networking opportunities and a range of competitions.

 DIT students performed very well in the competitions;

  • Ruth Kearney Wolnik represented DIT on the Irish International Team, together with a student from Limerick College and Belfast Metropolitan College. 
  • Ruth Kearney Wolnik received Very Highly Commended in The Celebration Cupcake Challenge.
  • Michelle Doonan received third place and Caroline Crudden second place in the British Bakes Innovation Award in the Healthy Eating Muffin Competition.
  • Caroline Crudden received first place in the Devon Rose Bowl (Light Fruit Cake) Competition.
  • In addition to the competition prizes Anne Cullen was awarded a place on the Worshipful Company of Bakers course at the Richemont Bakery School in Lucern, Switzerland and Deirdre Flanagan was awarded a place on the Worshipful Company of Bakers and Fermex/ LeSaffre course in Lille, France.
