European Food Safety Authority hosts a visit by DIT MSc Food Safety Management students

The European Food Safety Authority, (EFSA), recently hosted a visit by students of DIT’s MSc in Food Safety Management. EFSA is the European Commission’s independent risk assessment agency and is based in Parma, Italy. It advises the Commission on potential food safety problems and how they may be controlled. The agency was originally set up  by the former Irish commissioner, Mr David Byrne to restore public’s confidence in food safety after the BSE and Dioxin crises.

Dr Gabriella Zancanaro of EFSA welcomed the group and discussed the work of the agency, in particular their role in assessing the food safety risks associated with the recent horse meat scandal. He said “It is very useful for EFSA  to hear the views of those currently working in the food industry together with those wishing to develop a career in the food industry”. A lively discussion followed on the successes of and the challenges facing the agency, the consumer and the food industry over the next ten years.

The visit came at the end of the 2014 European study tour, the theme of which the year was “ European Food Safety Regulation: Are Consumers now safe or just safe enough”. The study tour had started in Brussels where the programme participants met representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Council together with food processing industry and consumer representatives.

The MSc in Food Safety Management programme is offered on a Part-time basis (DT437) over two years  and on a full time basis (DT9437)over one year. Information on the programmes can be found at: http://www.dit.ie/postgrad/programmes/dt9437dt437mscinfoodsafetymanagement/
