Gold Medal for research on obesity

19 May 2014:  Shona Cawley, Research Dietitian in DIT, has been awarded a Gold Medal by the Association for the Study of Obesity on the island of Ireland (ASOI).  Shona presented her obesity-related research poster at the recent ASOI Conference which was held in University of Ulster, Belfast.  The poster, entitled “Folic acid and obesity in Ireland”, described the preliminary findings from an ongoing study at the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital.  The study is under the supervision of Professor Michael Turner and Dr. Daniel McCartney, DIT.  The main findings from the study show that pre-conceptional folic acid use and high dose folic acid supplementation in obesity are suboptimal.  Shona is undertaking the study as part of her M.Phil. research at Dublin Institute of Technology.
