DIT Grangegorman 2014 – the finishing touches are underway

Posted: 3 September, 2014

The new DIT campus at Grangegorman opens on Monday 08th September.  It’s been a busy week on site and the finishing touches are underway to welcome the first students to the campus.  This year 1000 students of art, design, photography and social science, and 200 members of academic and support staff will be located on the new city campus.

Colleagues, local residents, and businesses have had the opportunity this week to visit the site and see the development first hand.  Beautifully restored 19th century listed buildings have been re-designed to provide design studios, lecture rooms, recreation facilities, cafeteria, etc. – see http://www.dit.ie/grangegorman2014/whatsoncampus/ for some details of what’s on campus.  The landscaping around the buildings includes a spectacular courtyard space, An Croí, as well as a quiet ‘cultural garden’, and a large number of the original trees that have been protected during the construction phase.

Building is now underway on the Greenway Hub, which will be home the DIT research institute ESHI (Environment Sustainability and Health Institute) and to Hothouse, the business incubation and technology transfer office.  This will open in September 2015.

The next major development will be the design and construction of two very large academic quads, which are scheduled for completion in September 2017, and by then we will have 10,000 students on the campus – over 50% of all DIT.  This will coincide with the completion of the Cross-city Luas which will stop at the campus entrance at Broadstone, providing another valuable public transport connection.
