DIT students present ‘A vision for Cabra’

Posted: 11 September, 2014

A team of DIT students of Spatial Planning who developed a regeneration strategy for the Cabra area as their final year project had the opportunity to display their ‘ Vision for Cabra’ during the recent Cabra Community Festival.

As part of the project, the students were required to undertake extensive consultation with community members, associations and other stakeholders to inform their regeneration masterplan for the area.   Having developed their strategy,  they went back to community representatives to present their proposals.  These included a number of imaginative regeneration projects for the future sustainable development of Cabra, such as a new canal-side residential development, an extension of the Quarry redevelopment site, improved streetscapes for Cabra East and West and a regenerated neighbourhood centre for Fassaugh Avenue.

The ideas were well received and two of the local groups involved, the Tolka Valley Partnership and the Cabra Community Policing Forum,  invited DIT to display the project locally in the community during the Cabra Community Festival in the month of August.

Commenting on the students’ experience, David O’Connor, lecturer in the School of Spatial Planning and Transport Engineering, said “This exercise was supported by the DIT ‘Students Learning with Communities’ programme and it was awarded the Michael O’Donnell Teaching Fellowship Award 2013.  The students were immersed in a real-life community engagement situation which enabled them to design and implement, to a professional standard, a community consultation as if it was a real-life planning project.    The project comprised of a customised engagement technique carried out within the neighbourhood, ongoing urban design workshops and poster display / dissemination of the final project output. “
