Looking for accommodation for the next academic year?

22 May 2014: DIT students are being urged to book accommodation for next year as soon as possible to avoid difficulties in September. The Institute is taking several actions to increase the amount of accommodation available to DIT students.

DIT has increased the number of bed spaces that it reserves for DIT students for the coming academic year. The Institute has booked 560 spaces so far, which is an increase on previous years.

The Financial Aid and Accommodation Office are also in discussions with a number of providers to secure more block-booked accommodation. In May, the Institute and the Students’ Union will be contacting all students who have sought a place in DIT through the CAO, advising them to book accommodation in Dublin as soon as possible.

In spite of these actions, there is still a belief that there will be a shortage of accommodation in September/October.

The DAFT Rental report for February 2014 noted that there was a reduction in the number of properties available to rent - “A prospective tenant looking for a place to live in Dublin in February 2009 would have had almost 6,700 units to choose from. Five years on, there are fewer than 1,500 to choose from, less than half a month's typical supply.”*

Based on the projected shortfall of rental properties in September, Deirdre Corcoran from the Financial Aid and Accommodation Office gives students the following advice:

“If you will be looking for new accommodation for the next academic year, book it as soon as possible. If you have accommodation at the moment, try and hold on to it for next year. And if you are a final year student who will be leaving accommodation in Dublin, please try and pass it on to a fellow DIT student!”

Information on the block-booked accommodation can be found here: http://www.dit.ie/accommodation/ and there is additional information on the DITSU website: http://www.ditsu.ie/welfare/accommodation/

There is also a Facebook group which acts as a message board for DIT students looking to share accommodation - https://www.facebook.com/groups/DITStudentAccommodation/

The new campus in Grangegorman will eventually have 2,000 student accommodation spaces on campus.
