A Night at the Opera – A showcase of creativity across DIT

21 January, 2014: The stage is set, costumes are ready and final rehearsals are underway for DIT’s production of A Night at the Opera in the National Concert Hall on Thursday, 23 January, 2014.  Entitled ‘The Paris Collection’ the show will feature scenes from Puccini’s great Opera La Bohème and Lehar’s spell binding The Merry Widow.

After hundreds of hours spent in rehearsal time and work behind-the-scenes to make sure actors look their part, you can now look up at the stage, and easily get lost in the boulevards, back-streets and grand salons of 1950’s Paris.

What the audience won’t know is that in addition to the students from the Conservatory, the show includes work from DIT students of fine art, visual communications, interior and furniture design, and visual merchandising.  Indeed, everything, from the stage, the costumes, and even the event poster has been designed by DIT students.

Teams of DIT students from Interior and Furniture Design, Fine Art and Visual Communications worked together during Design Week 2013 on the design of the stage set. The winning team also designed the event poster and are now working on constructing the set. In addition to the design team, students from the Visual merchandising programme advised on the costume design for the scenes, which are set in the 1950’s.

According to John O’Connor, Director & Dean, DIT College of Arts & Tourism “This year’s DIT production of a Night at the Opera is a wonderful celebration of the skills of DIT students, and showcases the diverse creativity and talent of students across an array of disciplines in DIT.  For members of the public it is a fantastic opportunity to see the work of some of this country’s emerging singers, musicians, artists and designers”.

Tickets for "A Paris Collection" are priced from €10 and are available from the National Concert Hall t. 01 4170000 or
