DIT hosts ASC International Student Competition

Posted: 11 November, 2015

DIT will host the second annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) International Student Competition this year on 19 - 20 November on the Bolton Street campus.

The competitors will include Construction Management students from DIT, CIT, Oklahoma University, Auburn University,  CalPoly State University, and last year’s hosts, Birmingham City University.   The competition is being supported by contractors Sisks, Walls Construction; ABM Europe and Mott MacDonald.

Sonya Meekel, lecture in the School of Surveying and Construction Management, is coordinating the competition in DIT.  “This is a challenging competition for the students, who will work in teams of four.  On the day of the competition they will be given a brief, based on a real-life construction project currently underway at Dublin Airport.  The team will take on the role of Contractor in the refurbishment of the building.  They will then have six intensive hours to produce their solutions to the challenge before making a 10 – 15 minute presentation to the Industry Panel.  Based on their presentations, the top three teams will then be recalled to answer questions from the Panel.”

The construction project, which is being undertaken by Walls Construction, involves the renovation the Aer Lingus Head Office Building as a state of the art commercial office development.  It requires a complete strip out of all services, furniture, fixtures and fittings and the removal of the entire façade.  The student teams will each receive a pack of detailed information, including historic existing plans, architectural drawings and site layouts – but they have been warned to expect the unexpected!
